Sangkaya - Nuts About Coconuts

Sangkaya, outlet for coconut ice cream and coconut shakes is a Malaysian brand, inspired by coconut ice cream from Chatuchak weekend market.  This brand is expanding quite fast with 5 outlets in KL, 11 in Selangor and 2 in Melaka. Sangkaya ice cream is suitable for vegans and lactose intolerants as theirs without dairy and egg.

A simple menu that consists of 6 items:

1. Signature: 4 scope of coconut ice cream, 3 toppings of your choice & coconut flesh strips         served on coconut husk
2. Sundae: cup comes with 3 scope of coconut ice cream and 1 topping.
3. Shake: a mixture of fresh fragrant coconut water and coconut flesh blended in ice top with a scoop of coconut ice cream (My favorite).
4. Cone: a scoop of ice cream sprinkle with coconut toasted flakes.
5. Cha Yen: Milk tea infused coconut ice cream, serve in cone or sundae cup
6. Coconut water - freshly imported all natural coconut water

RM10.50 which is quite pricey with small scoop
Choice of toppings: Roasted Peanut, Toasted Coconut Flakes, Sweet Corn, Cereal, Kidney beans

If you were to compare with Chatuchak's version, you will prefer Chatuchak's coconut ice cream, so much better and cheaper. New competitor in town, Aroy Coconut Ice cream which I have spotted in Jalan Alor, Kuala Lumpur. They have 15 types of topping for you to choose.

QIngMing

Qingming or Cheng Beng is a traditional festival for ancestor worship. It usually falls on April 5th and at times April 4th.

This is the yearly tradition where Chinese will visit their ancestors’ cemeteries, clean their tombs and serve their dead family members some food or fruits.  This tradition is being practised in China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore.  You are allowed to carry out the worshipping 10 days before and 10 days after the actual day.

After the cleaning and prayers, the family members will burn the afterlife paper money or replica material goods such as clothes, shoes etc.

This practice is an act of being filial. One of the food item that is being offered is Fatt Kueh or Prosperity Cake.  You are required to decorate the graveyard with Josstick, silver, gold and color paper and stone on top of the papers as an act of collecting wealth.

Best Nyonya Kueh in Penang

For kueh, I will only eat those authentic nyonya kueh as no doubt of their quality. I have just visited this nyonya kueh factory, Moh Teng Pheow Nyonya in Penang.

Thumbs up for their kueh, though a bit pricey as you only get a real tiny piece but worth the quality.  Highly recommending their refreshing Fresh Honey Pandan drink (RM6).

I have tried their azzam laksa (RM5) but was not up to my expectation. However, we loved their Pie Tee (5 pcs/set) at RM7.50.  They also serve Nasi Kunyit, Nasi Ulam and Nasi Lemak here.

Assorted Nyonya Kueh ranged from RM0.50 to RM3.00 per piece.

Another place which I would like to recommend for nyonya kueh is located at Padang Brown, Dato Kramat.  Look for first stall, Mr Ong besides selling nyonya kueh also sell Kerabu meehoon, real yum!

Thermomix

Easy peasy cooking with the smallest kitchen in the world, Thermomix an appliance that have 12 functions all in one. I recommending this product for those staying in condominium or apartment,  no more mess, no more oily kitchen. And those who no nothing about cooking, you will be surprise that you can now cook!

12 functions i.e. weighing, mixing, chopping, milling, kneading, blending, steaming, cooking, beating, heating, stirring and emulsifying makes your cooking simple.  Their TM5 comes with smart Recipe Chip, just follow the recipe adding in required ingredients as temperature and timing is already preset so means even your children can cook, from Western to Asian cuisines!

Baked Cheese Cake
We did wild mushroom soup which taste exactly like those serve in restaurant. Creamy sesame dessert, pumpkin soup etc, healthier meal all done at home.

Besides desserts, you can cook noodles, curry, vegetables etc.

My teenage son did this apple pie, with thermomix every recipe seems to interest him. He did this chocolate cake as well using dark chocolate.
